andrew-meyer.com coming soon!

I just bought http://andrew-meyer.com, and I plan to put some material on it soon.  I may port this blog over to that address, or I might keep it as a bio/resume/contact/projects page.  Not sure yet, but I’ll write a post about what I decide later.

Tidbits (7/24-7/31)

Here are some links I liked this week. I would include virtually all of the videos from TechCrunch Disrupt (that whole conference was really well done). For brevity, here’s one of the video highlights of John Doerr (KPCB) being interviewed by Charlie Rose on “tectonic shifts in technology:” http://www.livestream.com/disrupt/video?clipId=pla_400810ff-aa43-4b53-9839-67b6bae4bfea Perspectives on Venture Capital from Marc [...]

Colors in Cultures

Recently found a visualization representing what various colors mean in different cultures and got lost in it for about 20 minutes.  Click here for the full size version (from the guys at information is beautiful).

Building up their war chests, tech firms rack up debt

I saw Silicon Alley Insider’s “Chart of the Day” today, and I was fairly surprised to learn that major tech firms are taking on a lot of debt.  Given the history of tech companies, taking on large amounts of debt is not a common practice.  Instead, tech firms will issue stock in order to build [...]

When User Centered Design Doesn’t Work

Here at Stanford we are conditioned to live by user centered design principles.  With the d.school, ME, and my department, MS&E, the mantra is: “listen to your users/customers.”  I have to say that I am grateful for my education in UCD, and I’ve learned how to simultaneously build both a software product and customer base. [...]

Business Week’s Most Influential Designers

So I’m a few months late on this issue from Business Week, but I’m glad I found it.  Here’s their top 27 most influential designers in the world.  There are some obvious picks like Apple’s Jonathan Ive (of iPhone, iPad, Macbook Pro fame) and Tim Brown, CEO of IDEO.  I was also pleased to see [...]

Adobe Releases CS5, Brewing War with Apple

While I haven’t played around with Adobe CS5 yet, the reviews and demos all make it look incredible.  Here’s a pretty good first look at CS5 from Wired’s webmonkey.  As evidenced by the many blog posts on the topic over the last few days, Apple has really created a mess for Adobe with the release [...]

Visual Representation of Fitts’s Law

I’m trying to write a little more on design and usability, so here’s a post on Fitts’s Law–one of the staples in HCI.  While Fitts’s law is generally accepted common sense, it’s nice to map it out which was done very well be Kevin Hale here.  If you don’t want to do all that reading, [...]

Google Launches Its Apps Marketplace

While I should be studying for finals right now, I just had to write a quick post about the Google Apps Marketplace. As you might be able to tell from my last post, I’m getting more interested in the ecosystems behind application marketplaces (mobile or otherwise). I previously interned at salesforce.com working on their force.com [...]
